Linking Alps

The Linking Alps project is part of the Low Carbon priority of the Alpine Space Programme. With participation from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia, the project aims to make route planning across borders easier for transit users in the Alpine Space. A number of Alpine Space journey planners will be connected in a decentralized approach, so that they can access each other’s information. In doing this, users will be able to plan cross border trips with multiple transit agencies all from only one participating journey planner app. Facilitating seamless cross border journeys will help increase ridership on public transportation and reduce the number of cars on the road, therefore reducing emissions.

Not only does Linking Alps aim to better connect a few initial public transit systems, but it also aims to make adding future regions easy too. Through the experience gained from this project and the similar EU-Spirit in northern Europe, it will become easier for other public transit agencies to exchange information with Open Journey Planners (OJP’s). By making OJP’s more accessible, other nearby public transit agencies are more likely to join, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the project. Linking Alps also aims to set a baseline for the quality of data provided by public transit systems to its customers. By doing this the project will ensure that users of all participating regions can access consistent and reliable data.

Within a broad project consortium – BLIC is (jointly) responsible for the following tasks because of its technical expertise and the knowhow of standardization in Public Transport:

  • Designing the system architecture.
  • Elaboration of use cases in the project area.
  • Definition of the technical specification of the OJP interface.
  • Technical and organisational information exchange as well as knowhow transfer to other groups with an OJP approach such as EU SPIRIT
  • Technical evaluation of the project results

Real Time Ferries (RTF) − sharing real time information for ferries in the Baltic Sea Region to facilitate passenger and goods transport.

Together with the Transport Association VBB Verkehrsverbund Berlin Brandenburg GmbH ( and further RTF-project partners, BLIC designs and implements the new RTF platform in the Baltic Sea region so that ferries can be connected to the hinterland – public transport and logistics companies – in real time.
