Project description:

National joint research project for the design and implementation of an innovative on-demand transport system for rural areas.

The objective of the project was to develop and implement a concept for an on-demand transport system that is integrated into the basic services provided by the transport companies concerned.

A rural area bordering on north-east Berlin was selected as the pilot region.

The design phase produced:

  • a transport concept for on-demand transport services which defined the areas and types of service involved
  • a concept for the customer interface and the human-machine interface for booking and dispatching of on-demand services by the transport companies, including:
  • integration of the on-demand services into the timetable information program of the relevant transport system,
  • web booking functionalities for customers,
  • manual booking by dispatchers,
  • routing, matching of transport requests in order to combine journeys, dispatching of the vehicle fleet
  • journey tracking within the dispatching system
  • the vehicle equipment and communication concept:
  • PDA with GPS mouse and GPRS components in the vehicle with a display showing planned journeys,
  • confirmation function,
  • transmission of location coordinates and information for the customer;
  • a communications server for data communications between the control center and the vehicles
  • links between the existing AVM system and the new on-demand services management system, e.g. to ensure connections

In the implementation phase, the concepts developed were realized by means of

  • the realization of the on-demand services,
  • the installation of the vehicle equipment,
  • the introduction of the integrated timetable information system as well as the the routing and dispatching system,
  • support for test operations and subsequent optimization.

Scope of services:

  • Concept for vehicle equipment on the basis of the requirements from the transport companies and the transport plans
  • Agreement of the transport plans between scheduled and on-demand services
  • Multi-company concept for ensuring connections between the different services
  • Support for the transport companies in introducing and testing the systems
