Networked Control Systems from the passenger’s point of view (workshop)
Summary of the event
A workshop entitled “Die Vernetzung von Leitsystemen aus Fahrgastsicht” (“Networked control systems from the passenger’s point of view”) took place on 26.–27.10.2006 in Berlin at the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs. 120 participants from Germany and neighboring countries heard system users report on their experience.
Political support for further improvements for the benefit of passengers was signaled by the opening words of Undersecretary Bernd Törkel, head of the transport policy department A1, and the Secretary of State and designated Transport Minister of the state of Brandenburg, Reinhold Dellmann.
What was the subject of the workshop?
It’s happened to everyone: you’ve just arrived somewhere by train and as you leave the station you see only the disappearing rear lights of the bus you wanted to catch …
Transport companies have already made big improvements in this area. Modern control systems manage bus and train services. Displays showing actual departure times and automatic securing of connections are normal practice within transport companies.
But for journeys involving more than one company, standardized solutions are necessary.
The application of VDV interfaces 453 and 454 and of the international SIRI standard has already resulted in significant improvements for the passenger – as was impressively demonstrated during the workshop.
Links between bus and train services are especially important, since they lead to vital improvements in the reliability of the public transport system as a whole. The great interest shown by workshop participants from transport companies, transport and local authorities and companies that realize technical solutions indicated how important the application of such solutions has now become.
We hope that in your region too, your bus will soon wait for you …
